Uncharacteristic performance from Nakamura

Wow. Two thirds of the way through the London FIDE Grand Prix Chess Tournament, Hikaru Nakamura is having an awful tournament.

He stands dead last in the standings, having lost 4 games and won only one.

According to what I've read, he had good positions in many of the games, but got into serious time trouble late in the games.

There's still a week to go, but this is almost certainly going to be a disappointing result for him.

Meanwhile, on the opposite side of the planet, the young Italian player Fabiano Caruana is having the tournament of his life. The Bilbao Masters tournament has an unusual format: the first half of the tournament is played in Sao Paolo, Brazil, while the second half of the tournament is played in Bilbao, Spain.

At the end of the first half, Caruana is alone in first place with 3 wins and two draws, including a magnificent victory over world #1 Magnus Carlsen and a draw against World Champion Viswanathan Anand.

There is a week-long break between the first and second halves of the tournament, so it won't be until later in October that we see how Caruana's result holds up.
