Professional awards

I happened to be wandering around the Google "recent publications" page and saw that today's entry is a paper written by my old friend John Black.

I thought for an instant this meant he'd joined Google, but no, he's still teaching in Colorado. I guess it's one of his former students who is now a Googler.

Anyway, while bouncing around the net I remembered that I particularly liked John's mention of a professional award he received in 1996:

I can't remember exactly the circumstances, but of course John was a recipient of one of the famous Knuth Reward Checks.

Though I see that Knuth is no longer issuing those checks.
